Public Safety

During Statements by Members, a Conservative member raised public safety and urged the House to pass his bill on violent home invasions. He said the bill would create a specific offence for home invasions, set a five-year minimum prison sentence, and make it harder for suspects to get bail. He described the lasting fear experienced by a young victim of an armed home invasion in Ontario, including families in Vaughan, and said the law should treat these crimes seriously.Written by AI from the debate. “I want the House to pass my bill on home invasions. It creates a specific crime for violent home invasions, sets a five-year minimum prison sentence, and makes it harder for suspects to get bail. Victims carry fear long after a break-in, and our laws need to treat these crimes as serious.”

Mr. Speaker, are “the bad people” coming back? A four-year-old boy in Ontario was still asking that question 16 months after an armed home invasion. No child should have to carry that fear. No parent should have to wonder whether they can promise to keep their child safe. For families in Vaughan and across Canada, the trauma does not end when the intruders leave. It follows them into every sleepless night, every unexpected noise and every single knock at the door. That is why today, I introduced a bill to keep us safe at home. My bill would create a distinct violent home invasion offence with a five-year mandatory minimum sentence and a maximum of life imprisonment. It would also make this a reverse onus bail offence. Our laws must recognize the gravity of criminals forcing their way into somebody’s home and then terrorizing the people inside of it. Canadians should be able to lock their doors at night, put their children to bed and go to sleep without fear. I urge all members of the House to support the bill, because families deserve to go to sleep without fear.
