The Economy

During Question Period under the topic of the economy, members discussed Bill C-39, the Building Canada Strong Act, which changes how major projects are reviewed and approved, touching on environmental assessment, energy regulation, trade corridors and labour rules. The NDP said the bill would harm Indigenous rights, environmental protections and workers’ rights, and asked why the government and Conservatives were moving it through the House quickly without giving Canadians enough time to comment. The Liberal response said the bill was not being rushed, pointing to consultations with First Nations, labour, environmental groups, businesses and provinces, and said consultation time had been extended over the summer and would continue.Written by AI from the debate. Official Hansard

Mr. Speaker, these committee hearings, as the member knows, are only the latest in a long line of consultations that this government has undertaken with first nations, labour, environmental groups, businesses, provinces and stakeholders from right across our country. In fact, we consulted so much, we had to double the amount of consultation time that we undertook over the summer. This process has been defined by the listening and the consulting that we have been doing with Canadians, and we will continue to do that.
