The Economy

During Question Period under the topic of the economy, members discussed Bill C-39, the Building Canada Strong Act, which changes how major projects are reviewed and approved, touching on environmental assessment, energy regulation, trade corridors and labour rules. The NDP said the bill would harm Indigenous rights, environmental protections and workers’ rights, and asked why the government and Conservatives were moving it through the House quickly without giving Canadians enough time to comment. The Liberal response said the bill was not being rushed, pointing to consultations with First Nations, labour, environmental groups, businesses and provinces, and said consultation time had been extended over the summer and would continue.Written by AI from the debate. “This bill will hurt Indigenous rights, environmental laws, and workers' rights. The government and the Conservatives are rushing it through without giving Canadians enough time to speak on it. I want to know why.”
Official Hansard

Mr. Speaker, the Prime Minister calls Bill C-39 the most consequential legislation of this Parliament. New Democrats agree it will indeed have profound consequences for all Canadians. It will trample indigenous rights, override environmental laws and violate workers’ rights, yet the government has allocated only eight hours to hear from witnesses not chosen by Liberals. This bill will deeply impact our country for decades to come. Why are Liberals, aided by Conservatives, ramming it through without properly consulting Canadians?
