“I want the government to add the names of the Canadians who died at the Battle of Ridgeway to Parliament's Books of Remembrance. They died fighting for Canada 160 years ago, and we should finally recognize their sacrifice.”
Official Hansard

Mr. Speaker, on June 2, 1866, nine Canadians were killed at the Battle of Ridgeway. It was Canada’s first battle fought on Canadian soil using Canadian troops with Canadian officers. Ultimately, 32 young Canadians died. Most were barely out of adolescence. Many people argue that this battle against Fenian raiders who crossed from the United States intensified discussions leading to Confederation. We may not have been standing here in the chamber today were it not for the sacrifice of these men who died on Lime Ridge in my riding of Niagara South along the shores of Lake Erie. After 160 years, it is time to finally recognize the sacrifice of these men, who defended Canada on Canadian soil, in Parliament’s Books of Remembrance, just a few short steps from the chamber. I call on the government to add the names of those who perished on Lime Ridge 160 years ago, recognize that sacrifice and show their names to future generations through respect by a grateful nation.
