The Economy

During Oral Questions on the economy, a Liberal member highlighted the spring economic update as good news amid global uncertainty and trade tensions, asking what it means for Canadians. The industry minister responded that the statement builds a strong economy and protects support programs despite the tariff war, citing an $11 billion deficit reduction and noting Canada has the second-fastest growing economy in the G7. Both statements came from Liberal members; no other party’s remarks were sampled in this debate.Written by AI from the debate. Updated .

“The spring economic update brought good news when the world economy is uncertain. I want the Minister of Industry to explain what this update means for Canadians.”
Official Hansard

Mr. Speaker, we received some good news this week. The spring economic update could not have come at a better time. Our economy is being affected by global uncertainty and trade tensions. Canadians need a government with a plan for protecting them while defending our economy. Can the Minister of Industry tell us what this update means for Canadians?

“Our budget plan is building a strong economy and protecting support programs, even with the tariff war. We cut the deficit by $11 billion. Canada has the second-fastest growing economy in the G7, and we are using that money to help Canadians.”

Mr. Speaker, my colleague’s question is very relevant, because he mentioned the tariff war, which is real and is affecting regions across the country, including his own. What we are doing though the spring economic statement is building a strong economy. We are also protecting the social safety net that is so important to millions of Canadians. At the same time, we are reducing the deficit by $11 billion. We are doing all that while achieving the second-strongest growth of the G7 despite the tariff war, and we are using our fiscal position to give back to Canadians. That is what building Canada strong means.
