Steel and Aluminum Industry

The debate centered on the Canadian steel and aluminum industries, job security, and the impact of American tariffs. Members of the Conservative party criticized the Liberal government for not following through on promises to sue companies like Stellantis and Stelco to save jobs, noting that the Prime Minister had not delivered on a promised U.S. steel deal. The Liberal government stated that American tariffs are hurting steelworkers and that it is working to protect jobs, announcing that it had begun legal proceedings under the Investment Canada Act to ensure companies uphold their commitments.Written by AI from the debate. “The industry minister promised to sue Stellantis and Stelco to get jobs back, but she has not sued either company or saved any jobs. I want her to stop talking and deliver real results for workers.”

Mr. Speaker, 10 months ago, the industry minister promised that she was going to sue Stellantis and get the jobs back. Did she sue? No. Did she get the jobs back? No. Guess what. The industry minister is now saying that she is going to sue Stelco and get the jobs back. Has she sued? No. Has she got the jobs back? No. When will the minister stop the talk and get results? Does her word to workers actually mean anything?

“The Conservatives have done nothing to stop American tariffs from hurting us. We will watch companies like Stellantis and Stelco closely. We have 11 days left, and we will do everything we can to bring Stelco jobs back and protect workers.”
Official Hansard

Mr. Speaker, have the Conservatives ever denounced the American tariffs? No. Have they done anything to prevent them from hurting us? No. That is why we need to make sure we have our eyes wide open when dealing with Stellantis and when dealing with Stelco. When it comes to Stelco, we will do everything to bring the jobs back. There are 11 days left. The clock is ticking, and we will make sure to protect jobs.

“The minister did not say if she will sue over American tariffs. It is the government's job to do something about this. I want a yes or no answer: will she sue after her 15-day notice ends?”
Official Hansard

Mr. Speaker, did the minister say anywhere in that answer that she was really going to sue? No. It is all talk and no results with the Liberals. She went on a diatribe about a whole bunch of things that the opposition should do in the face of American tariffs. Here is news for the minister: They are the government. They are the one who are supposed to do something about it. I will go back to this: Does the minister’s word actually mean anything? At the expiration of her second 15-day notice, will she sue, yes or no?

“Stelco is cutting 350 steel jobs in Hamilton. Conservatives have a five-point plan to save steel jobs: get a trade deal with the U.S., stop illegal steel dumping, end the industrial carbon tax, approve gas projects, and sue Cleveland-Cliffs. Which of these five things has the government done?”

Mr. Speaker, it has been a month since Stelco announced that 350 Hamilton steelworkers would lose their jobs. Here is the Conservative five-point plan to protect the steel industry and its workers: get a steel deal with the U.S., which the Prime Minister promised a year and a half ago; end illegal foreign steel dumping; get rid of the industrial carbon tax; pre-approve multiple LNG projects; and sue Cleveland-Cliffs for breaking its contract to the Prime Minister. Which of these have you completed?

Mr. Speaker, I love it when the Conservatives quote from our plan. It just validates us even more. Jokes aside— Some hon. members: Oh, oh!

“American tariffs are hurting steelworkers, and we are protecting jobs in Hamilton. Stelco needs to get back to us in 11 days. Its CEO cannot support American tariffs after promising to keep our steel tariff-free.”

Mr. Speaker, my colleague just referred to how we can support our steelworkers. Our steelworkers are victims of the American tariffs, and we have been there to support them. That is why we will make sure we protect the jobs in Hamilton. Stelco needs to get back to us in 11 days. The CEO cannot say that he will advocate for American tariffs at a time when he committed to making sure that our steel would go south of the border tariff-free.

“The Prime Minister broke his promise to get a steel deal. He allows foreign steel to be dumped here, keeps the industrial carbon tax, and looks weak. I want to know if he will sue Cleveland-Cliffs today like he promised.”
Official Hansard

Mr. Speaker, the Prime Minister broke his promise of getting a steel deal. The Liberals continue to allow the illegal dumping of foreign steel into the Canadian market. The Liberals refuse to cut the industrial carbon tax so that it is less expensive to work, produce and invest in Canada. The Liberals could take action today by taking Cleveland-Cliffs to court as they said they would. The Liberals’ lack of action makes Canada look weak. Will Canada continue to get bullied by Trump and his buddies, or will the Prime Minister file the lawsuit today?

“We have already started the legal process with a 15-page demand letter full of evidence. Cleveland-Cliffs must follow its promises to protect jobs in Hamilton and Lake Erie, and to push for trade without tariffs.”

Mr. Speaker, we have started the legal process under the Investment Canada Act. Under the Investment Canada Act, we need to send a demand letter. The demand letter is supported by true evidence. Of course, we can provide it to the Conservatives if they want. It is 15 pages long with all the evidence. The undertakings are clear. We need to make sure that Cleveland-Cliffs protects the jobs at the Hamilton and Lake Erie facilities, but it also needs to abide by the commitment of advocating in favour of tariff-free access. It cannot have its cake and eat it too.
