Public Safety

During Question Period on public safety, the Conservatives said most gun crimes involve illegally smuggled firearms and accused people without valid licences, and argued the government should instead spend money on border security, gangs, and mental health rather than the roughly $1 billion they said is being spent targeting legal gun owners. The Liberals replied that their measures are meant to support law-abiding firearms owners and asked why Conservatives oppose every government measure to limit assault-style weapons and reduce crime.Written by AI from the debate. “Most gun crimes in Canada involve illegal guns and people without a gun licence. The government should spend money on border security, gangs, and mental health instead of spending nearly $1 billion targeting legal gun owners.”
Official Hansard

Mr. Speaker, in the vast majority of cases, the firearms used to commit crimes in Canada were never owned legally and were often smuggled across the border. In 2024, the accused in over 80% of firearm-related homicides did not even have a valid license. Most of the other homicides involved mental health issues. Instead of investing in mental health prevention, in border safety, or in fighting street-gang crime, the Liberals are going to spend close to $1 billion targeting law-abiding citizens. Why are the Liberals wasting taxpayer money on programs that do not work?
