A bill to implement the Spring Economic Update, mostly by modifying various tax breaks, deductions, and rates. During debate, the Conservatives accused the Liberals of excessive spending and economic mismanagement, while the Liberals defended their record and accused the Conservatives of obstruction and divisiveness.
“I don't want to reopen the Constitution. Canada is big and has regional differences. I don't know all the details about BC Ferries. I want to believe we're fair to everyone. Maybe BC helps its ferries more. I have no idea. Give me more details.”
“I'm filling time by arguing about who gives long speeches. You talk too much. You're not a man of action. You don't let others speak. I'm shocked that you won't give them a turn. I want your newer MPs to talk so I can ignore them too.”
“I talk a lot. I won't stop talking. You can't make me. I like to hear myself talk. I talk to 'hold you accountable' by which I mean annoy you. I'm very important. I'm the 'best' at my job which is to talk and talk to push the Liberals' legislation. We all play a role. My role is talker.”
“I'm supposed to talk about the budget. But I'm going to complain about other things instead. The government spends too much. It's not working. I don't like that. They should do less. Debt is bad. The government is spending more after the budget. I don't like that either. These programs sound like they were just made up. They weren't in the budget. That's suspicious. Government shouldn't keep throwing money at problems. But I'm not going to give any specifics on what to cut. Just that there's too much spending. Spending is bad. It's the largest deficit ever! Inflation is bad. Everything is more expensive. The government promised fiscal responsibility but didn't deliver. We should look at this bill more before passing it. Let the committee keep working.”
“I don't think the government helps people by spending borrowed money. We want the government to spend less and get out of the way so businesses can build more and grow more food. Canadians need results, not slogans. We want to lower costs and make Canada more competitive.”
“This bill is bad. The government wanted every department to cut 15% to maybe balance the budget someday. But agriculture was the only one to actually cut research. That's not good for innovation. I'm worried we won't have safe food. And they're approving pesticides they said were bad before. What do you think of that?”
“I think the Liberals spent too much. The PBO said they spent new money on their priorities instead of lowering the deficit or giving taxpayers relief. They always spend more. But families are struggling. When the government has more money, Conservatives think it shouldn't just spend it.”
“I'm against this process. It gets rid of accountability. The government should have to defend its spending. If the bills are good they should survive review. If the plan is working we should see results. Instead we see higher costs, weak growth, and more debt.”
