Canadian Identity and Culture

During question period on Canadian identity and culture, the Bloc Québécois asked why foreign streaming companies like Netflix do not pay the levies that Quebec broadcasters must pay, and said the government backed away from a promised levy on web giants, leaving taxpayers to cover a $600-million cost instead. The Bloc asked whether the minister considered that fair, given the companies’ profits compared with ordinary Quebeckers’ incomes. The Liberal reply pointed to over $700 million for the cultural sector in budget 2025 and $95 million under the creative export strategy, which the opposition voted against, and said the $600 million had been held up for more than a year but would start flowing shortly.Written by AI from the debate. Mr. Speaker, they seem to be forgetting the historic investments we made in budget 2025, including more than $700 million for the cultural sector. Did they forget about the investment in the creative export strategy, which injected another $95 million in the cultural sector? We have not forgotten those investments, nor have we forgotten that they voted against all of them.

Mr. Speaker, I thank the hon. member once again for his question. It is important to note that that money has been held up for more than a year. That is why we announced an investment of $600 million, which will start flowing shortly.
