Foreign Affairs

During question period on foreign affairs, NDP MP Heather McPherson raised the planned acquisition of a Canadian submarine company by the Israeli defence firm Elbit Systems, noting a separate Israeli purchase of a Canadian offshore project as well. She said both companies are on a United Nations blacklist for complicity in genocide and the illegal occupation of Palestine, and asked whether the government would intervene to stop the sale. Parliamentary secretary Robert Oliphant replied that the government is focused on peace in the Middle East, protecting the rights of both Palestinians and Israelis, opposing further expansion of illegal settlements, and continuing to investigate the situation.Written by AI from the debate. Mr. Speaker, obviously, peace and the fragility of the situation in the Middle East are constantly on our minds as the Government of Canada. We will continue to do everything to bring peace, protect the rights of Palestinians and Israelis and ensure that the illegal settlements are not furthered. We will continue to do that every day as we continue to investigate.
