Adjournment Proceedings

In adjournment proceedings, Conservative MP Grant Jackson questioned the government about why no Manitoba projects appear on its list of major national projects, pointing to the province’s potential in ports, mining, farming and defence, and asking the Minister of Northern and Arctic Affairs for her plan. Liberal parliamentary secretary Ryan Turnbull replied that the government is working with Manitoba, noted pre-budget consultations with the province’s finance minister, cited cost-of-living measures such as tax cuts and grocery support, and said the Major Projects Office works with provinces and First Nations to advance projects meeting national criteria. Jackson pressed again, noting other provinces have between two and eight projects listed while Manitoba has none, and Turnbull said Manitoba is a priority and invited the member to bring forward more project proposals for consideration.Written by AI from the debate. “The Liberal government is ignoring Manitoba when it funds major projects. Our province has great potential in ports, mining, farming, and defence. I want the minister to explain her plan for major projects in Manitoba.”

Mr. Speaker, I rise again to ask my fellow Manitoban, the Minister of Northern and Arctic Affairs, and Manitoba’s only voice at the cabinet table, about the complete lack of major projects and development happening in Manitoba under the Liberal government. The minister’s response to my initial question about major projects coming to Manitoba, or the lack thereof, can be described as light at best. Where are the Manitoba Liberals? They are completely missing in action. Conservatives in Manitoba understand the potential of our great province. We have been pushing opportunities at the Port of Churchill for years, including in multiple campaign platforms. We know that more opportunities exist in expanding our mining industry, and the same is true for the potential in value-added agriculture and processing. As the heart of Canada, Manitoba is geographically positioned to play an even greater role in our national defence industry as well. Manitoba has all of this potential, yet where is the Liberal government’s ambition for its development? On what significant new projects is it working on to bring growth and investment to Manitobans? So far, Manitoba has been a flyover province for the Liberal major projects announcement machine. Will the minister get up and put on the record what her vision is for expanding major projects happening in friendly Manitoba?

Mr. Speaker, what an embarrassingly out-of-touch response that was from the parliamentary secretary. I asked about specific, tangible, physical projects that the Liberal government is pursuing for my home province, and all the member had to offer was that he visited it one time and had a 30-minute chat with the finance minister at the provincial level. How typical of the out-of-touch Liberals to forget about the province of Manitoba. Here are a couple of facts for the member. According to its own website, there are 20 major projects with the Major Projects Office. How many of those 20 major projects are in Manitoba? Not one. The port of Churchill plus is Manitoba’s only specifically identified initiative, and the government classifies it as a “transformative strategy”, not a major project, with absolutely zero details listed. Meanwhile, other provinces have eight, three or two projects listed. When will the Liberal government and the six Liberal MPs prioritize major projects in Manitoba?
