“The minister threatened to take Stelco's owner to court 22 days ago, but he has only sent warnings while hundreds of workers lose their jobs. The government must stop extending deadlines, enforce the company's job guarantees, and protect Canadian steel jobs.”
“Mr. Speaker, 22 days ago, the industry minister threatened legal action against Stelco’s American owner. Today, Cleveland-Cliffs claims it has complied with all 34 undertakings, while the minister alleges breaches of six binding commitments. Meanwhile, hundreds of workers face layoffs, and the government continues to issue warnings instead of taking legal action. It is enough letters and enough deadlines. It is time to act. Our Conservative steel plan calls for enforcing Stelco’s job guarantees, cracking down on unfairly traded Chinese steel, eliminating the industrial carbon tax, fast-tracking LNG projects using Canadian steel, and negotiating a deal with the United States. From Stelco to Algoma, steelworkers are paying the price as our industry faces mounting pressure. Canadian steelworkers can compete with the best people in the world. They should not have to compete with their own government. It is time for the Liberal government to stop extending deadlines, start enforcing commitments and start protecting Canadian steel jobs.”
