International Trade

During Question Period on international trade, Simon-Pierre Savard-Tremblay raised concerns that many goods made with forced labour are entering Canada with few seizures at the border, and asked the government to support his bill, Bill C-251, which would make importers prove their goods are not made with forced or child labour. Robert Oliphant replied that Canada has strong laws against forced labour, screens all incoming goods, and is rebuilding border services to enforce the rules.Written by AI from the debate. Updated .

“Canada lets too many goods made with forced labour cross our border. I introduced a bill to stop this by making importers prove their goods are not made with forced or child labour. I want the Prime Minister to help pass my bill.”
Official Hansard

Mr. Speaker, Donald Trump is imposing tariffs on countries that are not doing enough to address forced labour in their imports. Although that is an excuse, the fact remains that Canada is like a sieve; it has hardly made any seizures at the border. Last fall, I introduced Bill C‑251, which would require importers to prove that products from certain regions are not made with forced labour or child labour. Now that the Prime Minister is finally saying he wants to do more to address forced labour, will he get my bill passed at all stages?

Official Hansard

Mr. Speaker, Canada has some of the most vigorous and rigorous forced labour laws in the world, and it has been clear that we condemn forced labour everywhere and anywhere it exists. Every good that comes into this country is subject to rigorous import controls and screening. After a decade of neglect, we are rebuilding the CBSA to ensure we have enforcement. We will continue to do that work. We will protect Canada’s interests this day and tomorrow.
