Question period exchanges on privacy rules for the digital economy. A Liberal member said Canada’s rules on how personal information is collected, used and shared have not kept pace with technology, and asked how the protecting privacy and consumer data act would protect people’s data. The minister replied that the bill is part of the government’s AI strategy and is aimed at protecting privacy and children online, letting people delete their data and remove harmful fake videos, and stopping companies from using personal data to raise prices.Written by AI from the debate. “Our privacy laws are out of date, and Canadians need to trust how their personal information is used online. I want the minister to explain how this new bill will protect people's data.”

Mr. Speaker, Canadians cannot fully benefit from the digital economy if they do not trust it. The rules that govern how personal information is collected, used and shared have not kept pace with technology. The protecting privacy and consumer data act would recognize that. It would recognize privacy as a fundamental right and give Canadians the tools they need to take back control over their data. Can the Minister of Artificial Intelligence and Digital Innovation explain how the bill would protect Canadians and their data?

“We want to pass this privacy law to protect people's personal information and keep kids safe online. It would let people delete their data and remove harmful fake videos. It would also stop companies from using personal data to raise prices.”

The protecting privacy and consumer data act would do just that. We would give citizens the rights to deletion and to take down harmful deepfakes. We would act against surveillance pricing to stop price gouging. We would treat children’s information as sensitive. It is common sense. Canadians want it. The Privacy Commissioner supports—
