International Trade

Question period included a question on international trade. A Liberal member asked how Canada can build its relationship with the European Union as the government works to diversify trade and reduce reliance on any single trading partner, in order to expand opportunities for Canadian businesses and workers. The Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry replied that Canada and the EU are turning shared interests into action, welcoming EU leaders to Canada that week to build on the SAFE agreement, CETA, and the strategic defence partnership, and noted that the EU is Canada’s second-largest trading partner with $178 billion in trade last year.Written by AI from the debate. “Canada needs to trade with more countries so we do not rely on just one partner. How is the government working with the European Union to create more opportunities for Canadian workers and businesses?”
Official Hansard

Mr. Speaker, as Canada works to diversify its trade and reduce reliance on any single trading partner, how can we build our long-lasting relationship with the European Union to strengthen our economic ties, expand opportunities for Canadian businesses and workers and unlock the full potential of this important partnership?

“We are working closely with leaders from the European Union this week to build our trade and defence partnerships. The EU is our second-largest trading partner, with 178 billion dollars in trade last year. This work strengthens Canada and our economy.”
Official Hansard

Mr. Speaker, Canada and the EU are turning our shared interests into action. This week we are welcoming EU leaders here to Canada to build on SAFE, to build on the CETA and to build on the strategic defence partnership. It is our second-largest trading partner, and that is $178 billion in trade last year alone. We are building our national resilience, we are building our domestic economy and most importantly we are building Canada strong.
