What the law does
The law creates specific offences in the Criminal Code for intimate partner violence. It prohibits police officers from releasing an arrested person if that person committed an intimate partner offence within the past five years or is already on release for one. Courts can also order an accused person into custody at any stage of proceedings for an assessment of their risk of reoffending. Additionally, the law extends how long seized property can be held from three months to one year.
