A bill to make it easier for police to get Canadians' data from telecoms and tech companies without a warrant. The Liberals say it's needed to help police. The Conservatives point out it would let police demand data without a warrant, let them get info on people police 'have reason to suspect may commit' an offense in future, and let them hide these demands from the public for up to 6 months. Most of the bill is about empowering police, but MPs spent most of their time discussing child abuse cases.
“I want people to think we are tough on crime and that this bill will keep them safe. I'm hoping if I talk about victims and bad guys it will make our plan sound good.”
