Government Business No. 9—Changes to Standing Orders

A procedural debate over changes to House of Commons committee membership numbers. The Liberals, now a majority after some floor crossing, want committees to reflect that change. Despite earlier cross-party negotiations, the Conservatives and Bloc accuse the government of a power grab and undermining accountability and collaboration by seeking to control the proceedings.

“The Liberals play games to get a majority. They made backroom deals. I don't like that. They want to control committees too. It's not an official majority but they find ways to win votes. This is the second time they did this! I want to hear what you think.”

“I don't like that the government bought itself a majority. I think they tricked us. I hope the MPs who crossed the floor will change their minds again.”

Hon. Kevin Lamoureux

“I want the government to have more power in committees. I think we should keep the tradition where the party with the most seats gets the most power on committees. We won some elections recently so now we should get that power. I don't think this motion takes away any important rights from the opposition. We can still work together sometimes but at the end of the day the government should be able to pass the laws it wants.”
