Combatting Hate Act

Bill C-9, Combatting Hate Act · Senate amendments · now law Where it stands

What the law does

The law creates a hate crime offence for breaking federal laws out of hatred based on specified factors. It also makes it an offence to promote hatred by displaying symbols in public, or to intimidate or block people trying to access places used for religious worship or by identifiable groups. In addition, the law removes the requirement for the Attorney General to consent before hate propaganda charges can be laid.

“I want to thank the member for Saint-Hyacinthe—Bagot—Acton for his friendship and his hard work for Quebec and Canada. I wish him well in the future.”
Official Hansard

Mr. Speaker, it is an honour to rise. Today is a sad day because our dear colleague, the member for Saint-Hyacinthe—Bagot—Acton, has made this decision, which was already well known before he gave his last speech. However, it is important for me to thank him for his friendship, for his very hard work on the important issues facing Canada—I hope he forgives me for saying so—as well as the issues facing Quebec. I wish him all the best in the future, and I hope he will continue to think about the rest of Canada, because we need the values that are embodied every day by the Bloc Québécois.
