A bill to create a national framework for recognizing skilled trades and making it easier for skilled trades workers to move between provinces. During the debate, the Liberals talked about the need for this framework and how it would bring back respect for skilled trades, while the Conservatives accused the government of ignoring the needs of trades workers and the Bloc questioned the need for the bill.
“I'm proposing a bill to make it easier for skilled workers to move between provinces. It won't fix everything, but skilled workers and companies want it. It would make it simpler for people to get their skills recognized when they move.”
“You say you respect trades workers, but you cut their grants on page 217 of the budget. When Conservatives tried to restore those grants, you voted against it. Why did you join the Liberals to block our effort to help trades workers?”
“This movie sucks. I was there and it was bad. Businesses hurt because of tariffs. Ottawa should not add bad rules to fix something that's fine. Why is the government doing this? Do they not have work?”
“I want this bill to pass so the government can say it's helping workers. Every province should change their rules to match what I think is important. Minor details shouldn't hold back my big idea.”
“I want the government to help my son get a job in his field. We need young people to fill these positions so the government can build many big projects.”
“I want young people to think about skilled trades. I want our national shipbuilding program to have more workers. I want skilled workers to be able to move around Canada. I think this bill helps those things. I think young people want this too.”
“The government messed up. They should fix their own mistakes, not make us pass a bill to make a plan to fix them later. I want the government to stop attacking trades workers. The government says it wants to help workers, but then it made a rule to give less money to students who go to trade schools. That’s not fair. Some schools got an exception, but not trade schools. Conservative MPs said that was wrong, but all the Liberal MPs voted for it, even ones who said before that it was wrong. Talking about making a framework isn't the same as actually fixing the problem. The government should stop saying one thing and doing another.”
“I say this bill will let Ottawa take over Quebec powers. Ottawa should not control job training or pick which job skills count. Quebec already does that. We in the Bloc will vote no to this power grab!”
“I like this bill. It's a good idea. We should have a national framework for skills. It will help people work in different provinces. I'm disappointed in the Bloc. They don't like it. But Quebec does a good job with skills. We can work together. People need good jobs to meet their needs. This bill will help. It sets deadlines. There will be progress. BCIT and colleges can help. We gave Red River College millions of dollars. We can make a difference.”
“I want to make Canada a place where people see themselves being able to have a good job and raise a family in a home on safe streets. The Liberals are failing on that front. People are leaving our country because they do not believe there will be a job waiting for them after they get their education. Steel workers are scared those jobs are not going to be in Canada anymore. The Prime Minister failed on trade deals and tariffs. He cannot get the job done. We will put forward ideas and policies to grow the economy so that young people stay and see a future in Canada.”
